Munich Private Tour Guide

Phot Guide MunichMy name is Gregory Schaffner - your quintessential private local tour guide for Munich and the Bavarian countryside.  This area is the number one destination for visitors to Germany!  For the most authentic experience possible, I guide these private exclusive tours on foot and by public transport (such as the world renowned German Rail system, bus, or taxi) depending upon the destinations you choose and your preferences.  I include the history and background of every sight we visit so you'll see its place in the German culture as well as its beauty.

My City- Let's take off!!  By foot and on Munich's fabulous public transportation system, we'll discover the best Munich has to offer!  Highlights include: the Marienplatz with its famous Rathaus (City Hall) and Glockenspiel, the baroque Asamkirche, the renowned Alter Peter (Munich's oldest church) the ever tempting Viktualenmarkt with its famous culinary delights, the Residenz palace of the Wittelsbach rulers, and not to be missed, a stroll through the English Garden with one of the most picturesque outdoor Beer Gardens ready to quench your well-deserved thirst.  A tour of the beautiful Nymphenburg Palace (the birth place of "mad" King Ludwig) with its famous Coach House, Porzellan Manufaktur and Botanical Gardens could also be a part of your day.

About Me- I'm a native Oregonian and have been a European traveler for more than 20 years (I started young!).  Transplanted to Munich 9 years ago, I have become extensively versed in Munich City and Bavarian history.  I was a German Language and Business double major at Linfield College and the University of Vienna, Austria.  My other interests beyond the local history range from music (I'm an accomplished organist) to gourmet cooking.

My Past Guest's Comments

"Recently on a trip to Munich my friend and I were lucky enough to take a walking tour with Greg Schaffner.  We had a very short time in the city and wanted to see as much as possible in our short time.  Greg really made the city come alive for us.  We saw churches and markets we would never have discovered on our own.  Additionally we learned about the Bavarian royalty which came in handy over our next two days of travel !!  Many thanks to Greg for making our trip so much more rewarding !!  Katy Ryan, Atlanta, GA, June 2007

"Gregory was absolutely first class as our city guide.  We spent nearly 10 hours with him, walking into every church and gothic structure in the town.  His insight the on history of the cathedrals was astounding, and everywhere we went people knew him!"  Rick F., Tampa FL, May 2006

" I recently used a private guide for a walking tour in Munich.  His name
was Gregory Schaffer, I got a hold of him from your site.  He was very professional and did a very good job.  He tailored the tour to our desires and was on time and courteous.  I would recommend him to someone else looking for a walking tour in Munich.  Thank you for your help."

Dave McCullough, 2006

"While in Munich we had a Travels with Friends guide, Greg Schaffner, who did an excellent job for us.  We are "elderly" folks who, without him, would have had a difficult time finding all the wonderful things to see in Munich."  David M.  New Hartford, NY, USA January 2006

"I had a tour Nov 20 with Gregory Schaffner in Munich.  He was great! I had a great time, I made him walk as fast as he could to make use of my limited time.  He was very knowledgeable about the history and he used the time to teach me as much as I could take in.  His ideas of how to make our connections were well thought out and very useful.  His rates were very fair.  He was good company because he really likes Munich and I took away a respect for the industry and creativity of the people.  I'm recommending him to my friends."  Patti C., Walnut Creek, CA USA, December 2005

"Just wanted to write and tell you how VERY much we enjoyed our time in Munich thanks to Gregory Schaffner.  Our tour w/ him was superb, but that was only part of the excellent treatment which we received from him.  He helped us book our hotel, helped us plan side trips, and personally booked us for a tour of the BMW factory.  We could not have found a better choice for a guide/friend in Munich."  Nancy and Larry C., Elkton, MD USA, December 2005

"I toured Munich with Greg for a full day on October 7, 2005.  We had corresponded prior to my arrival and I was able to list the sights I was particularly interested in as well as the things I like and don't like to do during a tour.  He tailored the tour perfectly to these requests.  I feel like I saw a lot of Munich, if not most of it!  One particularly useful technique Greg uses is to continually incorporate reference points so that you understand the layout of Munich in terms of historic significance, and also so that you can find your way around later.  (I'm pretty good with directions, but Munich was challenging!)  And finally, Greg was an absolute delight to spend a day with.  I highly recommend a tour with Greg."   Cheryl Adams, San Francisco, CA

"We toured Munich with Greg on September 19 and had such a great time we extended our stay an extra day to see more of Munich!  What made his tour so special for us was his knowledge in depth of the history of each sight we went to.  Lunch at Augustiner Brau and an afternoon visit to OctoberFest - It just doesn't get any better !!"  Gary & Julie A.,  Parker CO, September 2005

"We loved Greg!  He just went with whatever we wanted to do.  He was real open to anything.  I was initially concerned about spending 8
hours with a guide, but Greg was great.  We had been to Munich before, but Greg showed us the stuff we had missed!"  Karen and Howard H., Mission Viejo, CA,
September 2005

"The tour was a good value, since Greg took us to places we would not have picked on our own and offered connections among the sights we were seeing, telling us cultural (or practical) links between physical “places” and the events and people who went with them.  Many of those insights cannot come from guidebooks but only from living in the city and getting to know it.  Since he is an American native, we could have the conversations that make those connections in a way that would not be possible with our limited German language skills and vocabulary.  The Munich public transportation system is excellent, and we suggest buying a day pass (or three day pass) before taking the tour with Greg.  It will save time that should be spent touring with him (this is the voice of experience).  Listen to his restaurant recommendations and by all means see the Botanical Gardens if you are so inclined."  Larry and Joyce D., Devon, Pennsylvania, September 2005
